In the quaint garden of Jane High's home in Scratby, Norfolk, an unexpected and delightful attraction has taken root, quite literally. What began as a unique hobby for Alan Sewell, a north London resident, has now become a beloved local curiosity, thanks to High's dedication and creativity.
A Village's Journey
The story of this miniature village is one of legacy and love. Sewell, the original creator, crafted an entire world in his garden, complete with concrete houses, a church, and an array of meticulously designed models. Upon his passing in 2006, the village found a new home in Great Yarmouth, where High would pass by daily, her interest piqued by its charm.
"I always thought it needed a bit of TLC," High reminisces. Little did she know then that she would become its guardian.
A Chance Encounter, A New Home
Fate intervened when High met Sewell's daughter, and the decision was made to entrust the village to High's care. The process of dismantling and relocating the village was no small feat, but High's passion and dedication shone through. Over one summer, she meticulously reconstructed the village, ensuring every detail was in place.
"It was a labor of love," she shares. "From digging out the garden for the concrete roads to creating the hill for the church, every step was a journey."
A Miniature World, A Big Impact
Today, the village boasts over 20 tiny buildings, each telling a story. From a 1960s garage and forge to a whimsical windmill, it's a journey through time and imagination. And, of course, what seaside village would be complete without a fish and chip shop?
"It's a unique blend of the traditional and the unexpected," High explains. "You've got your classic village scenes, but then there are dinosaurs and Doctor Who figures. It's a reflection of the village's evolution and its appeal to all ages."
A Smile-Inducing Attraction
High's motivation is simple: to bring joy. "Seeing people smile as they pass by, that's the magic of it," she says. And it's this joy that keeps her dedicated to maintaining and evolving the village.
"It's a labor of love that has taken over my life in the best way possible," she adds with a laugh.
